Springfield Blogging - KSFX
After a cup of coffee I headed into Springfield for a blogging day. Brad Haller invited me to join the 7:00 AM KSFX morning newscast.
For me, it was interesting to see the production elements of the show. The KSFX newsdesk and the KOLR newsdesk sit yards from each other divided by a set of cameras on rollers and swivels allowing the two channels to share resources and reduce production time.
I was interviewed by Rob Evans - nice guy. He seems like a fun guy to have a beer with and a horrible guy to share a bathroom with. The man above holding (as my daughter would call it) his "pretty princess" mirror. In between stories Evans shared his light hearted demeanor in between the loving gazes he reserves for himself. By the way, he has a good sense of humor about it and posed for the picture above.
The news desk is populated by the unnamed gentlemen posted above. The assignment desk is elevated above the reporters, much like a courtroom and serves as a reminder of who "the man" is.
I'd hoped to spend some time with the Springfield News-Leader and had hoped an invitation to watch the News-Leader Editorial Board in action. Unfortunately, my request was denied, but I was able to scrape a quick video interview with Green County Sheriff Jack L. Merrit (Tony Messenger's arch enemy) which I'll be posting shortly.
The division of Springfield's CBS and FOX affiliate (KOLR & KSFX)isn't as distinct as "the other" dual network broadcasting company in Springfield would like their particular marriage to be.
KSPR (ABC) and KY3 (NBC) are supposed to be competing, which creates an opportunity if the rice paper walls don't fade away this year. As a result, I've been nudging Ron Davis to pick up coverage in Taney County. This is particuarly important when it comes to court coverage as KY3 retains the right to determine who will have access to the Southwest Missouri Judiciary.
KOLR was the first to open a Branson bureau and the Springfield News-Leader had a Branson bureau for 15 years. At this point, no networks have satellite operations in Stone and Taney Counties.
There's been a move afoot in the greater Springfield Market. The move involves paying less attention to the Branson community.
Theres an expression commonly used in journalism - follow the money. If we're following the regional money trail it leads to Branson and would seem the bottom line would entail acknowledging Branson as part of the larger community.
Branson reported record earnings while other local governments have had to scale back services this year. The majority of tourists coming to Branson drive through Springfield and regional travel benefits both population centers.
To be fair, it was an acknowledged failure of Springfield based media organizations that caused a contraction and focus towards the activities occurring in the heart of Springfield.
On the surface it appears the Springfield market is producing more local content, reacting well to competition and would benefit from focusing more energy to the southern part of their broadcast area or.....

Correspondence with Missouri's Department of Conservation
Dear Representative of Missouri's Department of Conservation.
Dear John,
Thank you for informing me of the laws regarding Trout limits. Contrary to popular belief, I don't enjoy trout fishing one bit. It's the tasty fish flesh I crave and hope to make this experience as painless as possible.
Perhaps you could help. Though I write to my readers about the enlightenment one receives as they strive for excellence in the Hillbilly Arts, I realize my ability to easily catch my limit is more a matter of understanding science.
In order to get a return on my investment, perhaps you could slide some information my way to tilt the odds in my direction. The cool water released from the bottom of the Table Rock Lake through the dam provides the environment by which the tasty fish snacks are released. Since I'm outside of the Trophy Trout zone I don't hear the alarms go off when water and new fish are released for my stalking.
A list of drop off points (GPS Coordinates proffered) time of release and the number of fish being released at points other than the dam might help me get the upper hand.
Also, according to the manual, children are able to kill at will. If I pay a child 5 dollars to go fishing with me; how much higher will our joint trout limit be?
Lastly, how much does it cost to produce trout into the lake (dollars per fish)?
Dear Darin:
Glad to hear you enjoy trout fishing in the Ozarks and specifically Taneycomo. The information Renea sent to you is correct. Your information was mostly correct except for the daily limit of trout is only 4 not 6. If you would like to know where to find information directly from the Missouri Department of Conservation you can go to our web site: www.mdc.mo.gov .

Missouri Lobbyist Files
The picture above details the resolution capacity for the Lobbyist Pitches posted in full and individual files can be viewed by clicking the image or link at the bottom of this post.
The 125 pages of archived images were shot from a Hi-Resolution camera. Each image can be blown up by clicking on it. The link below is a slideshow of pitches lobbyists have made to government entities in the Branson area. A few of the photos are fuzzy but are posted to maintain the integrity of the filing system.
The documents give some insight to how power and presence is peddled to the executive and legislative branches of Missouri Government.

Day off Politics - Gone Fishing
Instead of heading to Jefferson City I'm preparing for trout week. It's a spiritual practice of the Hillbilly Arts. Unlike those fishing for sport; during trout week I eat or trade every Steelhead aka Rainbow Trout that gravitates towards my hook.
Lake Taneycomo, named after its location (Taney County, MO).
A few miles upstream the state breeds trout which makes its way down to the docks two hundred yards from my apartment. The cost per fish is somewhere in the neighborhood of $3.50 and the state charges me 12 dollars for a fishing license, and an additional 7 dollars for a trout stamp. I can keep up to six fish daily.
At daybreak I'll start earning the money back.
When I get back, we'll talk about Jefferson City and the results of the official gunshot starting Media Hunting Season or Political Races throughout the state. In the meantime I'm hoping you'll help me do some homework with the "Ultimate Lobby File Showcase"
If Fly Fishing is your gig checkout Fly's and Guides.

Bodies Exhibit Controversy
The bodies exhibit which was displayed in Branson last year has been receiving a lot of national attention lately. The issue is over civil rights and the means by which the silicone injected bodies were obtained. Apparently, the official line regarding how the bodies were obtained, from a university in China, is disputed.
The means by which the bodies were brokered, without the owners permission, is highlighted by Tony's Kansas City who is asking Union Station in Kansas City, where the bodies exhibit is currently being displayed to address the human rights issues involved with smuggled bodies for science and entertainment.

In 2006 I hired a full time engineer through a Silicon Valley Tech Firm. Ethical concerns delayed my move into the practice. Humans are the most valuable resource on the planet and the most under appreciated and undersold. As the world grows smaller through technology human rights issues involving an international labor market need to be addressed, will continue to be a concern and promise to reveal tragic consequences should we turn a blind eye. Props to Tony of Kansas City for stepping up and speaking out.

Missouri Courts Information Sharing Matrix
This post is in response to a local business owner's request for infomation regarding Missouri's judiciary. The matrix posted above depicts information exchange and flow.
Over the next few weeks we'll be discussing Missouri's Senate debate regarding the Missouri Plan.
Interesting side note; I was reading a local gossip rag called the Sprinfield Business Journal and noticed they were selling contact information for 26 local courts (location name and address) for a relatively high fee.

The City State of Branson (International, State, Local)
Over the past several months we've been in the process of developing more sophisticated content delivery mechanisms. The goal is to align diverse subject related content.
For those interested in the history of Branson and Taney County I would highly recommend reading the "Land of Taney." The book elaborates and provides a guide to how our history has been preserved in addition to how future development of researching our history is being played out.
The author, Elmo Ingenthron, states understanding our local history helps us understand and provides context for state, national and international politics. In general, governments trickle down. Since immigration is a topic we've been covering in-depth, let's take a look at the dialogue.
Both Soviet and Continental politics (international) create the context for our discussion. Last year while traveling to a computer training center in Chihuahua Mexico I learned minimum wage in the state is less than a few dollars a day. A stones throw away from the Mexican state sits Texas where minimum wage is 10 x's the amount. The fall of the Soviet empire sets a similar stage for Eastern European on labor politics. In Europe the tension between lower income laborers marks a clash of cultures. The rhetoric heard in the United States between naturalized citizens and foreign immigrants mirrors Western Europeon nation-states.
Congress failed to pass an immigration passage and several thousand (est 5,000) bills were passed by states to address illegal immigration. While covering the Iowa Caucuses we recorded an interview with the leader of another city-state in Pennsylvania. The video of Pennsylvania Mayor Lou Barletta was posted on our Presidential Politics website. Another controversial figure, Jim Gilcrest, founder of the Minutemen was posted as well. At the state level we've posted several press releases from Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon and Governor Matt Blunt on the issue.
In Branson, two alderman have addressed immigration during planning sessions. Alderman Stephen Marshall has expressed concern over national immigration policy elaborating on the demand the business he manages, Chateau on the Lake. From Marshall's perspective, the federal government needs to ease regulations on temporary workers. Unlike smaller businesses in Branson that may get away with hiring illegal workers, Marshall has to answer to corporate leadership that demands thorough background data before hiring can occur. In a recent newspaper article, Marshall asserted that Americans don't want the type of labor he's offering.
Mirroring the landscape of temporary workers in Branson which include Eastern Europeon, Jamaican and Latin labor, an illegal human trafficking network was shut down after investigation by the FBI. The workers "smuggled" were of both Eastern European and Mexican descent. Alderman Jack Purvis has promoted tighter regulation of illegal immigration. While in Iowa, Cris Bohinc was asked what her stance on the topic was. Bohinc and Purvis are challenging each other for the alderman seat. Bohinc wanted to do familiarize herself with the issue before commenting.
The editor of Time Magazine was asked that the biggest threat to America was before he retired. His answer, "Beware of Tribalism." The question of identity permeates every aspect of our society and some believe presents a threat to civilization as we know it. In a fascinating interview with a female Arab activist and a Muslim cleric the issue of culture clash vs civilization clash was addressed. During the video, the newscaster cites Samuel P. Huntington as the author of the civilization clash model the Arab woman is referring to. The argument Huntington makes is that the future of world conflict isn't one of nation-states but of civilizations. He applies his theory to immigration .
Social theorists have addressed the issue with dangerous consequences. At the turn of the last century Adolf Hitler used Carl Marx's pamphlet "The problem of the Jew and the German State. Marx theorizes a Jewish man who lives in Germany views a Jew living in Russia as his brother before his neighbor German. Interestingly, the text is rarely discussed but available from Oxford. The politics of identity are profound and divided among behavioral preference, philosophical perspectives and birthright.
As I write the embassy in Serbia is burning. A clash of civilizations threatens the stability of an international community.
On Martin Luther King Day we posted a video of Barrack Obama speaking to a black church the Martin Luther King once led a congregation. Obama criticized the black community for not doing enough for the gay community. In Missouri, the editor of an activist gay publication in St. Louis called me to elaborate on a campaign to stop churches from teaching against homosexuality from the pulpit. Is this a clash of identity, culture, or civilizations?
Either way winter will end soon and Branson will need inexpensive international labor. Stay tuned to see how city hall will approach the issue.

Will Cold War With Cuba End - Castro steps down
The two posters above were propaganda pieces created ny the Cuban government during Castro's regime. The first is titled, "Those who plunder always live in fear" and the second "End the Blockade".
Much of US history seems to be forgotten, at least many attributes of the cold war era are a fading memory. The Cuban missile crisis will always be remembered by a generation but the 1980's, when these posters were created marked the decade we actually fought with Cuban troops. Much of the US efforts utilized foreign mercenaries recruited through ads in European Newspapers. The battles were played out on the African continent during a decade where modern warfare touched the lives of natives living in primitive isolation.
The history will be told over this next week in every newspaper. The U.S. Government states no change in posture or policy regarding Cuba will ensue though it's unlikely this stance will last long.
More to come ...after the sun rises...
Quick Note About Branson Political Coverage
On January 28th we posted Branson's final candidate list for the upcoming election.
Ward II Alderman hopeful Cris Bohinc's name was misspelled. The post was brought to my attention this afternoon. Occasionally, not often enough, we run posts through spell check. Cris' last name is unique and the name was altered to fit the closest noun. I was sent an e-mail at a busy time and didn't really think much of it - major mistake. After being approached I apologized to Cris.
Unfortunately, the post aroused some contention and raised some questions about coverage.
In the past we've tried to balance out coverage of candidates by giving them equal opportunity to voice ideas. Over the next few weeks we'll be working hard to give all candidates running an opportunity to address issues they find important as well as issues citizens address. Some of these discussions have already begun.
We'll work hard to make sure every candidate has a forum to enter assertions into the realm of public debate. We're not endorsing any candidate but would rather put issues on the table and facilitate potential leaders contributions to public discourse. It's not our intention to choose favorites or assert personal opinions. We've tried to balance coverage in the past and will strive to continue this tradition as we move forward.
Often, when a story is covered correctly both sides are disappointed. They feel convicted by a belief which is why they enter ideas into the public debate to begin with. Politicos are often upset when the report doesn't choose a perspective. It's the realm of human experience and perspectives that we hope to communicate not the writer's personal bias.

Missouri's Department of Family Division Services
Over the past year I've been a battle with the Department of Family Division Services.
According to the government entity, any funds transferred to the mother of my child for her health and well being as dictated through court order is deemed a gift.
Unfortunately, the Department of "Family Services" is a ridiculous bloated bureaucracy which dismally failed an audit earlier this year. The public humiliation of the marked failure hasn't stopped the department from ruining people's lives - including the disruption of my own.
Please note, this is big government and protecting a multi-billion dollar cottage industry built upon the social trend of broken families is the catalyst behind the politics.
Under normal circumstances, one parent sends a check to Jefferson City and a credit card issued to the primary custodian is credited within a few days. Unfortunately, in my case, the state doesn't always handle the money well - it could be days, weeks or sometimes the Department of Family Division Services doesn't even credit money at all.
Likely story right?
A lot of the services I provide on this website, such as the 800 number to the right side of this page were created to close the gap between my daughter and me. The number is a non-combatitive way for communication between my child and I to continue whether or not my child's other parent and I are getting along.
To prove the Department of Family Division services dismal failure in facilitating transfer of funds I withdrew money from my bank account last October and handed the money order to "the other parent".
She filled out the form, enclosed the money in an envelope with the necessary notations and sent the check to Jefferson City. In regular form - the state never credited the account.
Taney County and Christian County, where my child's parents live are both under the jurisdiction of the 38th Circuit Court. Here's where things get interesting. The Christian County Sherriff has a policy of ignoring court orders that aren't distributed through the county. In other words, if I want to enforce transfer of custody, the Sherriff will obey the law of Christian County but not the law of the state of Missouri (Enforcement of State Statute varies from county to county). Ironically, the sitting family judge in Christian County - same circuit - was the attorney who negotiated my parenting plan.
Let's review:
1. Missouri Department of Family Services - Stealing money out of my kids mouth, fails to distribute money to other parent for care of my child when sent to the state
2. Christian County Sherrif Department - Ignores state statute, refuses to follow Missouri Constitution or abide my Missouri Law.
Here's where things get interesting. The Christian County Prosecutor's office has a special grant from the Department of Family Services. The same department that has a record of stealing money from my family has plenty of money to help prosecute me for not participating in their thievery. If succesful, the state can imprison me for 4 years at a cost of $248,000 to taxpayers for a $3.000 debt.
As you'll see, if you haven't followed this blog for the past three years, I have a good understand of the judicial system. I have a working understanding of the consitution of the United States of America and the State of Missouri. These documents are of no interest to some government officials as I've learned firsthand.
Once in a while I try to remind readers that these core documents which provide the foundation of American democracy were earned through the blood of patriots who fought against the tyranny of the corrupt. These were my ancestors, my daughters ancestors and those born on this soil have been given a gift.
When I speak of the importance that we remain free and self-governed - I'm talking about our efforts today. I'm speaking of a generation's duty and a fight that must continue and cannot be guaranteed from one generation to the next. There is a constant fight to ensure another generation remains free. I fight for open government for my own child, so she may live free.
Here in Southern Missouri there are compromises being made. There are government entities who believe they are above the law. There are agencies that treat the constitution as a document they can do without and have no obligation to protect.
Those elected have took an oath. And if they fail to oblige their duty, if they fail to honor their oath - they are nothing more than liars urinating on the graves of our nation's fallen soldiers. This may happen often without recourse. But, it's not going to happen on my watch if I have a say in the matter.
In the meantime, I'm setting up a bank account. Money will be deposited in the account and my child will not starve because of Missouri’s Department of Family Division’s irresponsibility. My support is not a gift but rather the fulfillment of the command of Judge Justus. And if an extended stay in prison results, it will be from the conviction of a jury of my peers – which will probably not happen, because the average man or woman seems to have more moral fortitude than the average politician.

Fire at Contruction Site
On 2/16/08 at approx. 12:30pm Western Taney Co. firefighters responded to a construction area off of Buena Vista Rd. for report of a dump truck on fire. Upon arrival firefighters found a large dump truck with the cab fully involved. The truck was approx. 1/2 mile off the paved road. It took firefighters several hours to get enough equipment and water to the scene to completely extinguish the fire. Heavy rain made access to the area of the fire difficult for firefighters. The tractor portion of the truck was totally destroyed. Cause of the fire is undetermined. The truck was hauling at the time of the fire. Owner of the vehicle is Tom Boyce Construction.

How Matt Blunt and Republicans can return to the party of Lincoln
The words of Colin Powell at the Republican Convention in 1996 echo in my memory.
"The Republican Party must always be the party of inclusion. The Hispanic immigrant that became a citizen yesterday must be as precious to us as a Mayflower descendant. The descendent of a slave or struggling minor in Appalachia must be as welcome and must find as much appeal in our party as in any other party or in any other American life. It is our diversity that has made us strong. Yet our diversity throughout our American history has also been a source of discrimination, which we as guardians of the American dream must rip out branch and root.- Colin Powell
"It is our party, the party of Lincoln, that must always stand with equal rights and fair opportunity for all. And where discrimination still exists, where the scars of past discrimination still contaminate and disfigure the present, let us not close our eyes to it and declare there is a level playing field and hope that it will go away by itself. It did not in the past. It will not in the future. Let the party of Lincoln be in the forefront, leading the crusade, not only to cut off and kill discrimination, but to open every avenue of educational and economic opportunity to those who are still denied access because of their race, ethnic background or gender."
Analysis of the Democratic playbook today seems to steal the Republican legacy of the past few decades. It’s a legacy of inclusion temporarily lost. Last month I ran into Missouri’s Lt. Governor Peter Kinder in the Hilton Hotel Lobby. He was having a hard time pulling himself out of a book he was holding. The book was a biography of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Kinder cited tales of one the nation’s most powerful judges with childhood glee.
We tend to think of the civil rights movement as the domain of the Democrats, but applying the politics of inclusion is the domain of the Republicans. They fought the ERA but when it came time to elect the first female Supreme Court Justice it was Ronald Reagan that introduced Sandra Day O Connor. The induction was the result of a question Reagan asked, "What can I do for the women of America?"
When Alan Keyes was campaigning earlier this year to become the next Republican presidential candidate, he resurrected the spiritual dialogue of Republicans past who fought against the tyranny of slavery and applied it to economics.
– Alan Keyes.
The income tax in effect makes us vassals of the government. No mere "reform" of this slave tax can correct its fundamental denial of control over our own money. Only the abolition of the income tax will restore the basic American principle that our income is both our own money and our own private business — not the government's. Replacing the income tax with a national sales tax would rejuvenate independence and responsibility in our citizens.
Some cite the nations most racist group identify themselves with the Republican party though the KKK movement during the early 1900’s was exclusively Democrat. Near the time James Brown wrote, “I’m Black and I’m Proud”, he endorsed President Richard Nixon. To Brown, equality meant an even playing field and opportunity for all.
Missouri’s founding circumstances mark a distinctly negative turning point when it comes to race politics in America. The “Missouri Compromise” was a compromise of the nation’s moral fortitude. The public record shows an unrepentant state.
Other moral compromises have already received the benefit of gubernatorial apologetics. Missouri’s Mormon history allowed the legal murder of citizens for acknowledging a prescription of faith.. Some historians propose it was the organizations stance against slavery that inspired Missouri’s Governor Lilburn W. Bogg’s to implement executive order number 44 in 1838 which resulted in the rape of Mormon Women and legal execution of Mormon men.
In 1977 Governor Christopher Bonds rescinded Bogg’s order and issued an apology, yet the compromise of 1820 remains unaddressed.
The purpose of this article isn’t to belittle Democrats. In many ways, Democrats promote a Christian ethic, considering the cause of the “least of us”. To undermine their contribution to the politics of inclusion would be grossly unfair.
My point is the politics of inclusion aren’t the Democrats sole domain and is a concept the Republicans need to embrace if they hope to bring new members into the fold. The philosophy of economic freedom has appeal to people of all ethnicities.
The Missouri Compromise marked the end to slavery in the United States above 36 degrees latitude and it’s time we raise the bar. Governor Matt Blunt says he’s done everything he set out to do as governor. Perhaps, he could take it a step further and ask what he can do for minorities in the tradition of Ronald Reagan – who appointed Conner to promote gender reform.
Perhaps, he could lead the charge back to the roots of the Republican party. Perhaps, he could help abolish some of the pain of our past by condemning the actions of leaders past who embraced slavery. Perhaps, it’s time Republican’s take the mantle of Lincoln back.
It could start here. It could start with Governor Matt Blunt issuing a formal apology for the sin of slavery. Perhaps, in doing so, Governor Blunt can help the party heed Powell’s cry and help the Republican party return and repair the mantle of Lincoln.
Do Democrats like Democracy?
Local attorney and Hollister judge Randy Anglen forwarded a petition this week to persuade Superdelegates to follow the will of the people when selecting a Democratic presidential nominee.
Foreign nationals have a hard time understanding the delegate process. Allow me to sum it up. Here, in America, your vote may or may not count depending on the integrity of delegates. Delegates are representatives of the people who get to vote. Instead of voting for a president - you vote to have a delegate elected who actually casts deciding votes. Some states require delegates to follow the will of the people through statute. By default its a question of moral fortitude - which varies by individual and demands a functioning moral compass.
Appointing delegates is a painstaking process. Because the process is so important, delegates are chosen based on their loyalty to individuals and the party. We're eight months away from an October surprise and the elongated election process ensures the democratic party has plenty of opportunities to error - which seems to be a pattern every time Democrats have a sure thing. In fact, thats why the Suuperdelegate process was birthed - to ensure the radical factions of the party don't appoint a Democrat with little chance of winning a general election. Unlike years past, both remaining Democrat contenders have a good shot of winning the presidency. Both poll ahead of their potential Republican rival.
Delegates are chosen on the basis of friendship and loyalty. Remember that guy you bailed out of jail? Since he owes you - put him on your list of delegates should you ever make a bid for president. Multiply this by a few thousand and you have a better understating of the delegate process than most Americans - who actually think their vote counts.
Superdelegates are Democrats who have shown political prowess and electability. The list of superdelegates is composed of sitting Democratic governors, senators, congressmen and Dems that have achieved status through a vote of the people in the past.
The question is, will they vote for the candidate a majority of Democrats want to see elected? Click on the link above to view the current Superdelegate count and background of the people who will choose who the next Democratic presidential candidate will be - regardless of how the people actually vote.

Murder of Unborn Child May Lead to Death Penalty
Bobby Cutts was found guilty of aggravated murder of an unborn child just a few minutes ago. The mother of the child,Jessie Davis, was carrying the child of Cutts at the time of death.
The Canton, Ohio jury found Cutts innocent of aggravated murder of the mother and guilty of aggravated murder of the child which Davis was carrying. The verdict may result in the death penalty at sentencing.
The case is historic because the rights of the unborn child will be tested by the Ohio judiciary. The determination that violently terminating the life of an unborn child and a resulting death sentence promises to challenge the very definition of life.
Other states such as California have similar laws on the books.

Branson Landing Merchants Attempt Collective Bargaining
The Branson Landing opened with a bang but growth of the lakefront shopping center on Taneycomo Lake in downtown Branson has slowed considerably to the concern of shop owners.
A group of merchants met earlier this month to consolidate interests for a collective bargaining approach to negotiating with Branson Landing management. The group hopes to liberalize policies, increase marketing efforts and promote policies friendlier to merchants.
Willy Theisen, retired founder of Godfather's Pizza and owner of Famous Dave's at the Branson Landing is leading the charge and will arrive in Branson this week to address HCW and Urban Retail, the company responsible for managing the outdoor mall.

My memory of Tom Lantos
Tom Lantos led the most fascinating political event I've ever witnessed in my life. A political animal by nature, I've studied and watched movement action and government debate since the early days of my youth.
A few years ago I watched a live broadcast of the Congressman from California took on the top technical leaders in the United States begging, "I don't know how you can sleep at night".
Mindful of the Nazi concentration camps he escaped twice from in his youth, the Hungarian native pounded the CEO's of Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, AOL and Cisco took the stand while Lantos forced the tech giants to confess their sins against democracy and freedom worldwide.
Perhaps the most surprising was Google, the third giant to succumb to censorship in a perverse fashion (Microsoft and Yahoo were first to compromise human liberty vying for a chunk of the Chinese market). The Chinese government never officially told Google to censor words such as Democracy and Freedom - not through a list of outlaw conocepts provided by the government but rather censorship based on the values they felt the Chinese government wouldn't appreciate. It took Western minds to implement suppression of speech and notions of unalienable right for the current Chinese regime.
The technical infrastructure was provided by Cisco giving a network interface to local Chinese police agencies, enabling them to control Internet communication and initiate arrests at a local level. Yahoo turned in a journalist to the Chinese government because of his philosophical dissent to China's regime. The reporter was arrested - possibly executed - through companies and technologies Made in America.
One horror story revealed to testimony to Congress involved a man who was severely beaten - inches from death - and being bound while all of his equipment was taken by the Chinese government. After details of the incident were revealed we learned the man who was nearly killed for speaking against the Chinese Government lived in Atlanta at the time of the incident.
Lantos reminded me that democracy was alive, that their was evil in the world that needed to be combated. He was a reminder of hope having survived rule from the two largest genocidal governments the world has ever seen (Nazi Germany 11 million and Lenin/Stalin Soviet Union 15 million).
A quorum of the greatest technical leaders of our day dropped their heads - convicted - apologizing - having served against the interests of freedom - having helped create cogs for the machinery of oppression.
Mr. Lantos was a survivor, a hero, a man who stood by his beliefs, a champion for democracy, freedom and human rights. He reminded us about the necessity of endurance when all seemed to be lost and for a moment served as our national conscience as our country's top technical leadership lost theirs.
Tom Lantos words to Yahoo delivered to founder Jerry Yang.
Morally you are pygmies...an appallingly disappointing performance. I think we cannot begin to tell you how disappointing Mr. Yang's and your performance was...attempt to obfuscate and divert...outrageous behavior."

Branson became an "overnight sensation" with the national tourism industry in the 1990s and, then, it happened again after a group of local tourism leaders created a wintertime seasonal promotion known as Hot Winter Fun. It was marketed in 1994 to close the brief seasonal gap between Christmas and spring and it provides year-round activities for Branson visitors.
"The fame might have come overnight, but the success of Branson as a tourism destination certainly was not," said Ross Summers, President/CEO of the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Branson’s tourism industry was built up over many decades of hard work by local townspeople who were imaginative and practical and completely believed in this town. January and February were somewhat risky because Branson does have a winter season, but there are far more nice days in winter than ice days.
"People were coming here year-round to fish in local lakes. They were coming year-round to shop in Branson. They were coming year-round to play golf. And some folks that were coming to Branson were unaware that many of the attractions were closed for the season in the winter months.
"Every year since 1994, more businesses have opted to stay open to accommodate visitors during January and February. There are always plenty of fun things to do in Branson."
Tourists will find a calendar full of things to do such as taking in Branson shows, shopping after-Christmas sales, golfing, visiting indoor attractions and museums and fishing on the area’s three lakes.
In a national comparison, Branson is one of America’s most affordable vacation destinations and because many locations offer discounts during the winter months, Hot Winter Fun is a good time to visit and very economical.
"Escaping to Branson after the holidays is both relaxing and entertaining. The easy pace, combined with so many choices for fun, makes a visit to Branson during Hot Winter Fun the perfect escape," said Lynn Berry, public relations director for the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Convention & Visitors Bureau.
"Hot Winter Fun has proven to be very successful. Over the past 14 years, visitor numbers have increased during these winter months. Many folks have discovered that they can find a great vacation here any time of the year," said Summers.
Evie Mohrfeld, travel writer for the Post-Dispatch of Rochester, Minn., echoed this sentiment. She wrote, "Visiting Branson… We realized how the area has become a year-round tourist attraction. It’s totally family-friendly with many new shows and attractions always popping up. It’s a safe haven, which is the reason so many choose to live in this Midwest area… Re-visits to Branson are a new experience any season and every year."
