City of Branson Revenue At All Time High
Branson's current city administration has more money to play with than ever before with income at an all time high.
The two images above depict income flowing into Branson's city budget. Again, many businesses in Branson are suffering as they are nationwide; however, Branson city leaders have more money to play with than ever before despite press releases and correspondence that speak otherwise.
2008 marks a record high in sales tax up 4.8% from Branson's record 2007 increases,. The City of Branson's Tourism tax is up3.7% above 2007 - once again an all time high.
As stated in the last three posts and for several months, Branson's deficit is due to new spending not a decline in revenue.

If new spending allocated to special interests translates to fiscal responsibility, then we can call this administration "very responsible". And if we can call hiding the success of the Branson Landings contribution to the Branson economy "open government" ......
Branson Chamber of Commere Continues Battle Against Digital Press
The Branson Chamber of Commerce will be spending another $600,000 to compete with Branson Businesses in 2009 to siphon web traffic from Theaters and travel companies marketing on the Internet.
While television, radio and print campaigns create demand, the Branson Chamber of Commerce Internet strategy utilizes predatory methods to cannibalize web traffic that already exists.
The Branson Chamber of Commerce claims they're a private organization justified in building a small handful of businesses who've directly benefited from redistribution of traffic thwarting private enterprise. Two of the primary beneficiaries of the "regional marketing group" are members of the Board of Alderman.

The Branson Chamber of Commerce and Convention Visitors Bureau acknowledged efforts to control user generated digital communication during their second quarter presentation citing expenditures to quash Internet speech inconsistent with Branson Chamber Objectives.
Late Summer, the Branson Chamber of Commerce launched a hate campaign encouraging Google to censor the Branson Missouri Blog, utilizing a tax payer funded database, Lynn Berry of the Convention Visitors Bureau sent correspondence to hundreds of users asking members to fraudulently label "Branson Missouri" in order to meet an objective that couldn't have been met through scrupulous methods.
Though Google didn't comply with the demands of the Branson CVB's censorship attempts, the site was moved to the Missouri Netizen domain to avoid further economic damage.
The two members of the Branson Board of Alderman who are active members of the Branson Chamber have helped establish city funding policy and strategy for the Chamber of Commerce.
Branson Chamber of Commerce Board members have been active behind the scenes with campaign assistance for the two members who serve on the Board and are expected to help as Mayor Presley and Alderman Marshall seek re-election; however, the Branson Chamber of Commerce doesn't "formerly" endorse candidates.
Branson Mayor Raeanne Presley sat on the Branson Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors while serving the first part of her term as Mayor.
Though cash flow and purchased media assets flow from Branson Tax Coffers back into Branson City Council members businesses directly, neither of the city leaders have refrained from voting on expenditures to the organization.
Presley and Branson Chamber CEO Ross Summers have held dozens of "off the record meetings" since she took office. Alderman Stephen Marshall, who runs the Chataeu on the Lake is rumored to have received several no-bid contracts to host the organizations events.
Raeanne Presley Launches Mayoral Re-Election Bid Using Stolen City Database
As predicted, Raeanne Presley launched her re-election campaign today using city resources funneled to a private e-mail account. As posted earlier this week, Presley has been using a private e-mail address to steal city communications resources for her private ventures which include promotion and marketing for her favorite Democratic candidates.The City of Branson has denied Missouri standards regarding open government and the Sunshine law claiming a re-route of communications to a private address prevents the press from access to the tax payer funded database.
Branson Mayoral Race - Dec 16th Filing Begins
Branson's mayoral position will be up for grabs again with filing beginning December 16th.
An objective look at political favors and cash flow exiting the city seems to reveal a re-election bid by Presley before moving on to another position at the state level. Clearly, political favors and cash rewards to entities outside of Branson indicate Presley is using her position as a stepping stone - or rather stepping on the Branson economy to further her political career (you can bookmark this one).
Why else would a politico flow cash to entities far from contributing taxpayers responsibility and far from the benefit of the city she's managing ?
Demographics show Presley performs well with older women with a high school education and below.
Meanwhile, at city hall, Raeanne Presley has tightened up on revealing documents in a semi-successful battle against open government and the Sunshine Law (not yet challenged in court). This appeals to the old-school Branson leadership who once ruled with a mafia style approach and Presley's successful restoration of a monolithic leadership structure designed to decrease worker wages to the benefit of an old-school watch with a kung-fu grip on tax dollars. There is millions of dollars at stake and a conscious effort to send higher paying jobs outside of the county.
Ironically, Presley's target market is the most harmed by the implementation of her fiscal policy. While Taney County is the third highest in state revenue it's also ranks as the third highest poverty rate in Missouri and a few beneficiaries like it that way. The Branson Chamber of Commerce fought hard to block a minimum wage increase when the issue came up on the state value a couple years ago. Presley has taken an additional $30,000 from Branson's budget to finance and support the "almost private" (they take millions in tax funds) to support the Branson Chamber political agenda.
Presley's solution - socialist style housing. The effective code word for this strategy is "Work Force Housing". Though beneficial if it involves federal and state funding, Presley isn't that patient and is moving to take millions in loans to initiate housing projects at local taxpayers expense. These socialist style housing projects generally raise demand for law enforcement as "Section 8" housing is historically synonymous with higher crime and decreased property values for nearby neighborhoods.
In Branson newspaper men make special deals with politicians. Tn an open meeting, pretendo journalist Gary G. successfully asked for the completion of a road near his newly purchased home. The writer gave some nice cookies in the form of news articles and is a main player in the coverup of Branson's money drain promoting tax increases several times running.
Is Presley beatable? It'll be hard enough and possibly dangerous for a political contender, particularly if database resources from the city continue to be laundered to her political campaign.
Branson Finance Numbers Coming out - Editorial
New data regarding Branson's finances will come out this week. Branson sales tax over the year 12 month rolling funds will reveal overall city income is at an all time high and though Branson may be somewhat recession proof it's certainly not Raeanne Presley proof, though the coverup is impressive. The sycophantic worship of Presley by time-share scamster Gary Godless is always a fine read.
I'm impressed. It's simply amazing how irresponsible government can be counteracted with an effective misinformation campaign. As one local news director proclaimed, "In Public Relations you eventually have to lie."
The shell game involved firing everyone in the finance department and nearly everyone at city hall with an IQ over 120. Word to city employees who want to keep their jobs, "Play Dumb".
The total money drain to the Taney County health department still hasn't been properly tabulated and Presley's million dollar witch hunt to find corruption with the past administration still remains fruitless though millions in favors to Presley's political partners is subsidized by the success of the Branson Landing - the very project Presley was elected to "clean up". It's sort of like hiring Stalin to clean up Lenin's mess - the solution creating far more problems than the original issue.
There's a lesson to learn here and it involves show business. While Presley plays Kirby Van Birch with city finances, personality plays a role. When a "financially involved" press plays Bambi all types of illusions can be pulled off effectively.
In a recent New York Times article Presley promoted balanced budgets. The article made me so happy I almost cried. Then I saw the city numbers and the sincere lack of integrity Branson city leaders have been demonstrating and I did cry.
Speaking of outright dishonesty, Presley's promise to "restore open government" is the biggest illusion of the current administration. Branson's Mayor Presley has found a whole new way to introduce "closed door government" - funneling e-mail to a private address. Her personal e-mail address has been printed on city stationary and a direct link from the City of Branson website. Sunshine requests for these documents have been repeatedly denied since the takeover by Sandra "the leak" Williams who collaborated with Gary G. to overthrow the leadership of former administrator Terry Dody- a boss she truly hated.
Sometimes in politics, personality trumps practicality. Dody wasn't good at passing out warm fuzzy's rather looking at his job as improving city income. On the flip, Preslsy's very good at "show business" but lacking in common sense fiscal management and responsibility, unless the purpose of Branson's government is to increase funding for Skaggs Hospital and draining city savings - in which case, she's a great leader.
Branson Missouri Poltics - State of the Polis July 2008
Mayor Raeanne Presley under heavy fire this week. The Branson Daily Independent called it "Mob like control" (see headline above) addressing a proposed liquor ordinance to what, after serious criticism, public pressure and lobbying Gary Groman was pressured, for the first time in two years, gives way to criticizing an action by Presley's new regime in a piece dubbed Liquor Czar.
Branson City Hall
Attempts to answer the basic questions, "Can I breastfeed my child at Waxy O'Sheas" and "Can I spank my child in public?" stump even Dr. Paul Link.
In lieu, Link promised he'd offer interpretation of the nuances between a "nipple and aureoles".
Meanwhile, Alderman Sandra Williams has become the Public Records CZAR personally addressing employees at the City Clerk's office.
The City Attorney now points to the board as well - he has seven new bosses -who can fire him at will if they don't like his legal advice. The new administration is good at one thing - increasing their power.
Economic Power and Political Power.
Presley is an organizer running retail political strategies with the precision of Obama. Constant Politicking.
Politically she's a "Swinger" pushing money to the Democrats and Republican alike. Presely's politics come in the wake of what Randy Turner dubs a money laundering scandal - stumping for Republican Gubernatorial hopeful Sarah Steelman while donating a C-Note to Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Jay Nixon.
**The Presley family donated more money to Republicans than Democrats this political cycle.
When pressed on funding Dems while stumping for Republicans, Presley doesn't hesitate - she supports her friend and Missouri's Former Bill Clinton Campaign Manager Katie Danner.
Danner also lobbies Branson City Council on behalf of the "League of Theaters" through her company Athena Consulting LLC.
Rumor is Danner's husband is being pruned for a General position.
On politics Danner says, "My husband serves in the military for both Democrats and Republicans alike."
This is show business, but how good is it?.
Business could be better. Maybe it's the headlines - At the hot dog stand Friday, July, 18 fifteen inquiries for Bud Light trickled in.
"The Mayor wants to promote family values" provides tourists an unsatisfactory answer..They all give the same response, "Why can't we have both?".

Two years ago I told Alderman Jack Purvis not to ask Ross Summers any questions when the Chamber asks for money. Questions from politicians to the Branson Chamber of Commerce always exhibit the art of fake debate.
Money Laundering Central?
Two members of Branson's City Council are direct beneficiaries of the organizations activities. Unlike normal chambers, the Branson Chamber benefits from millions in tax dollars.
The Internet is controlling the dialogue, and the Chamber of Commerce isn't having it. The Chamber explains why they need to spend serious cash to quash "Uncredentialed Journalists".

Lennon is a true statesman coming onto the board in a time of intense turmoil and was somehow able to tie together a small group of very powerful families with conflicting interests - special interests who want the publics cash.
Branson residents are active - vocal - and Lennon came at the peak of turbulence in the community - Oct. 2003.
The Chamber of Commerce wants to control the Internet and is willing to spend $300.000 not $400,000 to do it. All the money funneled outside of Branson to control a free-press.
Does Branson Have 8,000,000 People?
Simple answer - probably not - It's highly likely the people that generated the figure don't really believe it.
Whose Family's Values?
One interpretation is the Presley's the Mabes the Herschends. As far the most powerful taxing District in the region, the Tourism Tax Board - they're opaque. Not to suggest that they dress in red coats and sacrifice children, however, if they did, nobody would know because they don't make a habit of announcing public meetings too loudly.

A Casino opens near Joplin and Missouri's Senator Nodler debated in Branson last month that neighboring state's legislation has a profound affect on the regions economy. Nodler wants us to be easier on the Corporations.
An airport moves to the south and Hollister is about to level Rick Davis's "ViewScape".
Meanwhile, rumors of a Casino in Berry County Ark., surface. Perhaps, it's like Pete Herschend said, "It grows like a cancer".
Lights Going Out on Sunshine Law in Branson.
The City of Branson's message board was once littered with various taxing entity meetings - TDD's, CID's NID's TIF's and other psuedo-political bodies.
Mayor Raeanne Presley stalls on a Sunshine Law Request for email's transmitted through the address posted on the City of Branson's Website and officially published literature. We use to do things on the record - not anymore. The missing documents have now been cited in meetings. by Mayor Presley.
There has never been this much money involved in Branson Politics.
Due to reporting irregularities, total funds dumped into last April's election isn't clear. But, if any councilpeople failed to report in-kind contributions an alderman could lose an office. One thing is for sure, more money was spent during this last election than ever before.
BRANSON - DOT - CON
Larry Milton double dips on what some refer to as a time-share front company - Branson.COM and the Branson Tourism Center.
Republican insiders claim Milton was a catalysts in moving the Branson Hills TIF forward.
With appointments to the Branson Chamber of Commerce Internet Committee, Milton helps set prices for Internet Advertising on the taxpayer funded website - always making sure to buy top spots when they become available.
Milton doubled on the maximum donation to Alderman Cris Bohinc as specified in Missouri Ethics Rules. The loophole legally allowed the donation twice above the limit due to the fact both of his private Internet domains Branson.Com and the Branson Tourism Center are under different corporations - each a corporation unto itself.

Just to make sure everyone gets the story straight, Branson City Council met with all department heads offsite for a "retreat". Far from print and broadcast journalists Branson Alderman define legislative priorities and a few fruedian slips offers more clues to what we are to see.
**Retreat ? This is a democracy - no white flags - no more retreats from the press.

Missouri Capitol Moves To Branson Missouri Thursday
Branson Missouri will be Missouri's Capitol for a day Thurday, May 22nd. Governor Matt Blunt will hold a press conference and meet with citizens from 1:00 to 2:30 at Branson City Hall.
From 1:30 to 2:30 Missouri Department Directors will be available for citizen inquiry.

Lots of Interesting Observations and discussions will result from the citizen survey presented at last nights Branson alderman meeting. Apparently, Springfield, Mo is using the same firm, ETC Institute, to conduct their citizen survey.

Branson Media's Conflict of Interest - Branson Alderman
The carefully laundered factoids strewn together into a collective body of published opinion that graces the front page of Ozark Mountain Newspapers tri-weekly tabloid are only sometimes marked "opinion".
The adjective before this series, "Old" is a good description for the ethically challenged reporting the community has been accustomed to over the last few years. What we can pin is the next victim of the "Old" columnist will be. Ironically, he's the last vestige of the "Old" watch and appears to remain the victim of the hatred which has defined the last year of "Old" style reporting.
Focusing in on the most recent series of setups we should examine the numbers which we are left wanting. Biased statements aimed at specific companies are reiterated. The hard numbers providing the score card for the economy are omitted. Instead the financial report can be summarized:

On the homepage of the Branson Edge a firsthand non-editorialized examination of the hard numbers is posted. Retrieving updated numbers has been difficult since the city no longer has a full-time financial director.
If Branson's economy is stagnant where is the failure? The theatre industry currently is the most subsidized industry in Branson reaping 10 times a return on their tax dollars. The money is funneled to a highly experienced local marketing agency, who often functions as a private club - without any real accountability.
The "old" reporter states Branson's numbers remain static while HCW properties continue to deliver an increasing return on investment. The infrastructure in the two areas are financed by (Tax Increment Financing) TIF dollars - like Silver Dollar City's TIF financed development. Of course, our neighbors to the north (Christian County) and to the Northeast (Joplin Area)and to the south of Branson (Hollister) all have massive TIF projects being negotiated. Both counties have higher anticipated growth rates than the Branson area.
Back to our massively subsidized fiscally static theater industry - If we're dumping $15 million dollars in taxes to boost an industry that isn't growing - whose responsibility is it?
Either the Theater industry is declining and being artificially boosted through massive marketing efforts just to tread water or the Branson Chamber of Commerce and Convention Visitors Bureau is a dismal failure promising to propel the Taney County Economy into bankruptcy.
We haven't reason to believe that the Branson Chamber of Commerce / Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau is failing us but the newspaper certainly is. They're failing us by conveniently ommiting details ( a violation of ethics) and failing to scrutinize the parties and economic attributes that create the business environment we all depend on to put food on our family's table.
If they ignore it, continue to act as "government lapdogs" instead of "government watchdogs" eventually they'll be drowned out in the way so many Branson area newspapers have - with relevant detailed coverage of our community by emerging publications.
In a year and a half, three members of Branson's City Government have been the focus of vile, biased and prejudiced attacks - while others are worshiped. The "Old" method of reporting has become predictable. Here's a view of an issue "Old" addresses regarding one of his sacred cows - Alderman Stephen Marshall.
Stephen Marshall is arguably the most intelligent, politically aware individual sitting on Branson's Board of Alderman to date. Marshall's full time job is to maintain and compete for convention business in one of Branson's premiere properties.
The fact Chateau on the Lake is competing for convention business is undeniable. Marshall's experience in the convention business puts him in a strong position to advise and interpret data relating to Branson's Covention Center - contrary to the statements expressed through faux-reporting (partial reports) and editorials the potential of a conflict of interest isn't so far fetched.
The conflict of interest isn't in the overall numbers or basic strategy - the question of conflict remains in the fact Marshall has access to the complete client list.
If there is any doubt whether a conflict exists, perhaps Marshall should be asked for a complete list of clients for the Chateau on the Lake. After he denies the request - maybe the "Old Bird" could ask why. Of course he won't
We're lucky to be blessed with John Q Hammon's vision for Table Rock Lake and we're lucky to have a man as brilliant as Stephen Marshall sitting on Branson's Board of Alderman though contrary to a year of "Old" reporting, Marshall doesn't walk on water and if the reporter gave half the scrutiny to Marshall that other politicians are given - the community might know it.
I don't want to conclude whether Marshall's position in oversight for a competing entity is a conflict, but to deny the legitimacy of such a question is ludicrous. No public official should be above scrutiny and failing to explore legitimate questions breeds the types of problems the press should be helping us avoid.
Branson's New Administrator Position Narrowed to Two Finalists
Branson's board of Alderman passed a number of amendments collectively dubbed "Dody's Laws" which vastly expanded the board of alderman's range of power in addition to a more open process by which citizens can question Branson's city department heads.
The City of Branson has functioned without a permanent city administrator for nearly a year. The press release issued by the city is posted below:
Aldermen select finalists for city administrator’s job
Branson Mayor Raeanne Presley has announced the two finalists for the position of city administrator. They are Dan Galloway, city manager in Stillwater, Oklahoma and Dean Kruithof, deputy city manager in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Within the next two weeks, Presley said the Board of Aldermen will hold a public reception, which will be attended by Galloway and Kruithof, to give citizens and community leaders a chance to meet and visit with the city administrator candidates in a social setting. Shortly after the reception, the mayor and aldermen will meet to select the new city administrator who could be in his Branson City Hall office in early summer.
Both Galloway and Kruithof were among several candidates interviewed by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen last week.
Galloway has 30 years of experience in public administration. Prior to becoming a city manager, he served as a program director for a joint federal-state planning agency for the Upper Mississippi and Missouri River system where he directed a major plan for the U.S. Congress to balance upgraded locks and dams on the Mississippi for barge traffic with environmental and rail industry concerns.
Since 1984, Galloway has served as city manager for suburban communities in both the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metro areas. In an economic development role for Stillwater, which has a population of 50,000 and is home to Oklahoma State University, Galloway serves as vice chairman of the Oklahoma Technology and Research Park in Stillwater.
Galloway has a Bachelors Degree from Western Illinois University and a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from Southern Illinois University. He and his wife Diane have five adult children and 13 grandchildren.
Kruithof has over 27 years of broad municipal management experience and has worked in administrative positions in Wichita, Kansas; Stillwater, Oklahoma; Pittsburg, Kansas and DeKalb, Illinois. He has been the Fort Smith deputy city administrator since 1999 during a period of strong community growth and development.
During his tenure in Fort Smith, Kruithof has had extensive experience in capital improvement projects including the development of a convention center, numerous street improvements and the expansion of the regional water supply. He spearheaded the city’s first comprehensive development plan and is involved with regional economic development efforts and affordable housing alternatives.
Kruithof has a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and Masters Degree in Public Administration from Oklahoma State University.
Kruithof was born in Carthage, Missouri, and raised in Miami, Oklahoma. He and his wife Cynthia have one son who recently graduated from college.
Branson Mayor Raeanne Presley - On Workforce Housing
I understand workforce housing to be housing that is affordable for the majority of our Branson workers – perhaps affordable really is a more descriptive term than workforce. The data I have comes pre mortgage meltdown, but it takes an income of slightly more than $30,000 to purchase a $100,000 home. I’ve seen 2005 data that shows the average salary anywhere from $23,500 to $24,500 in Taney County. Now, if we assume 2 wage earning folks who have a year round salary that $100,000 might not be so hard to reach, but assume a one parent household, child care costs, no mass transit not to mention just trying to find a home priced at $100,000 in the Branson's market. Much more difficult.
In 2003, only 11.6% of Branson workers actually lived in Branson. 51% commute from unincorporated areas. Only 51% live in Taney County. 17% commute from Stone, 5.6% from Christian, 5.5 from Greene. Now that is pre Branson Landing and the large number of job openings. Doesn’t take much to be concerned about the effect of gas prices on our workforce traveling into Branson.
Talking to all of the affordable housing unit managers – they continue to have long wait lists. Which is part of the switch of underutilized motels to weekly rentals. The Point in Time count identified several, more than I had wished for, motels that are now full time housing for some citizens. A very small room without proper cooking facilities can’t be good for families. Looking at what other communities have tried with these types of problems – success seems mixed. Most form task forces with high hopes and long lists of priorities, but the problems are very complex. A limited amount of housing at a reasonable price, poor credit, lack of ability to secure downpayments for movement into a permanent home are just a few of the issues.
I see that some towns have been partners with developers on housing units – from donating land to keep costs down, to securing grants, etc. for renovation of failing structures. I continue to talk with developers, but even those whose main business is affordable housing find the market too difficult. High land costs, high infrastructure costs. While we’re a long ways from any discussion of new taxes, I believe we could talk about denser projects, waiving of fees associated with construction, perhaps even waiving property taxes that the City might collect on a project.
Personally I voted for the increase in the minimum wage. None of the employees at Presleys’ make minimum wage – our lowest hourly wage is $7.50. We offer health insurance to full time, year round employees (our theatre pays 90% of the employee cost). Still, our seasonal workers receive no benefits. Our business is a little different, most of our ushers, concession, etc. are students or retired, just looking for a few extra dollars to bring home each week.
I believe the issue of higher wages is a personal business decision. You and I can both name businesses that close on a daily basis, and we know our visitors are the ultimate bargain hunters. Combine that with a possible recession and increased costs of doing business – fuel, utilities, insurance – I can’t name a single item that our theatre purchases that has gone down or even remained stable over the last years. So, yes, if the market gets tight enough wages will rise, but I am no economist and wouldn’t pretend to know the true impact of this topic. I’m most concerned that we still have too small a pool to draw employees from. In 2003, only 11.6% of Branson workers actually lived in Branson. 51% commute from unincorporated areas. Only 51% live in Taney County. 17% commute from Stone, 5.6% from Christian, 5.5 from Greene. Now that is pre Branson Landing and the large number of job openings. Doesn’t take much to be concerned about the effect of gas prices on our workforce traveling into Branson.
Talking to all of the affordable housing unit managers – they continue to have long wait lists. Which is part of the switch of underutilized motels to weekly rentals. The Point in Time count identified several, more than I had wished for, motels that are now full time housing for some citizens. A very small room without proper cooking facilities can’t be good for families. Looking at what other communities have tried with these types of problems – success seems mixed. Most form task forces with high hopes and long lists of priorities, but the problems are very complex. A limited amount of housing at a reasonable price, poor credit, lack of ability to secure downpayments for movement into a permanent home are just a few of the issues.
I see that some towns have been partners with developers on housing units – from donating land to keep costs down, to securing grants, etc. for renovation of failing structures. I continue to talk with developers, but even those whose main business is affordable housing find the market too difficult. High land costs, high infrastructure costs. While we’re a long ways from any discussion of new taxes, I believe we could talk about denser projects, waiving of fees associated with construction, perhaps even waiving property taxes that the City might collect on a project.
Personally I voted for the increase in the minimum wage. None of the employees at Presleys’ make minimum wage – our lowest hourly wage is $7.50. We offer health insurance to full time, year round employees (our theatre pays 90% of the employee cost). Still, our seasonal workers receive no benefits. Our business is a little different, most of our ushers, concession, etc. are students or retired, just looking for a few extra dollars to bring home each week.
I believe the issue of higher wages is a personal business decision. You and I can both name businesses that close on a daily basis, and we know our visitors are the ultimate bargain hunters. Combine that with a possible recession and increased costs of doing business – fuel, utilities, insurance – I can’t name a single item that our theatre purchases that has gone down or even remained stable over the last years. So, yes, if the market gets tight enough wages will rise, but I am no economist and wouldn’t pretend to know the true impact of this topic. I’m most concerned that we still have too small a pool to draw employees from. What is Affordable Housing? -
When I think of subsidized housing, my mind conjours images of cold-war Soviet housing structures. I think of corporate interests trying to keep wages artificially low and a painful reminder that the Branson Chamber of Commerce helped lobby against minimum wage increases.
But, some of the people in Branson - nearly all local politicos - are dedicated capitalists and are unified in support for affordable housing.

Media - Never got traction, Purvis took the most direct hits and Williams with frequency. Williams couldn't purchase what negative PR was generated. I know because I wrote some of it. When Stephen Marshall debated the Hilton's laundry budget, I blasted that over the front page! Good stuff. The message is time. Sixty days before election I told Jack Purvis that I wasn't going to help him, but 6 - 9 and 12 months before the election I advised Purvis how to engage the press. Two terms ago, Purvis ran on a platform to stop the Branson Landing. He flipped positions when he got into office, which he claims was a decision he made to . If Mitt Romney taught us one thing - it's that you can flip-flop all the way the Governor's office. If you can become the governor of Massachusetts flip-flopping your way to the top - certainly you can flop back - Purvis never flopped back.
Here's where Marc Williams tried to steal the master dialogue. The greatest conflict Williams was associated with - through other business relationships - is the 150 ft. ordinance. If you followed the video links below you'd here Jack Herschend recommend Branson adopt themed development. This statement epitomizes the hard right of the conservative movement. Technically, the last media buy was good, but wasn't utilized on the fly. Think about it - how long does it take to record a commercial. Days before election Williams fielded an attack mailer with a counter attack. The sheer logistics of launching a direct mail campaign on the fly was impressive. Why wasn't the radio message altered to maneuver with current events. Newspaper? This is an important attribute of retail politicking - a catchy response on the fly. This would have been Marc Wiliams best message:
"Hi I'm Marc Williams. I'm the proud father of three beautiful daughters and two smart ones. My friends and I got super rich off building the Branson Landing. They said we couldn't do it, but we did. I care about Branson because financially I'm more invested in this community than the local theatre manager, the ducks guy, the electric company employee the John Q Hammons hotel manager and the angry ex city clerk.
Also, I negotiated such a great deal with the City of Branson that I thoroughly understand the weaknesses at City Hall.
Did I work on behalf of an evil corporation successfully negotiating a 165 million dollar tax credit from the state of Missouri and the City of Branson - Yes. Who likes to pay taxes? If you like tax increases vote for the other guy. As for me, I'm a Certified Public Accountant - I've made my living understanding complex financing mechanisms and helping people gain control of their financial future. If you think I negotiated a great deal on behalf of my corporation - imagine what I could do for you.
I'm leaving HCW, it's made me rich and I want Branson to have a rich future. For some politicians spending tax dollars is a game. We don't hate the player, we hate the game - and taxing you is a game I'll refuse to play. Vote Williams - for your wallet.

Jack Purvis loses the money race. His intention, if he won another term as Branson Ward II was to unseat Rep. Dennis Wood during the 2010 race for the Missouri House. The media was ruthless with him and he gave up early - never asked anyone for a dime. Also, he never took advantage of his positions as the incumbent and failed to address the press properly. The incumbent can generate thousands of dollars worth of exposure if the plan early enough.
Message - Marc Williams never spun his financial ties to HCW which was the focal point of his competitors attacks. An alternative approach, to the customized message above, "Rick Huffman is evil which is why I'm leaving my job as a corporate whore to work for the citizens. If you join me, I'll help stop Rick Huffman and his evil plans to build high rise buildings" At night they could meet together to exchange jokes over a drink.
Jack Purvis's big trouble came when he started talking about increasing wages. This is generally a bad idea and probably why Lobbyist Chip Mason felt compelled to purchase local politicians. Generally, the Branson Chamber of Commerce - or as I call it - "Branson's 17 million dollar sacred leprechaun" doesn't like discussions about raising pay.
Machine - Apparently Jack Purvis has an underground network. The social conservatives leaned his direction. Bohinc had a script plotted by Lobbyists and sitting leaders. Though I detest the way the campaign was conducted - in the dark - the message team Raeanne Presley and Sandra Williams delivered resonated well. They got by on the philosophy that retail is an auxiliary to the theatre industry. The old watch heavily promoted Rick Davis financially and through influence. Strong political machines surfaced for everyone but Purvis. Davis had stronger grass roots machinery and Williams benefited from a talented staff of pros.

Jack Purvis refused to buy newspaper ads. I counted for a slaughter but Taney County voter turnout was ...what 10%? This is why the spread surprised me. I thought Purvis would have been mopped up. Psst... if Mayor Raeanne Presley personally stopped to speak with merchants and reportedly said, "I'm not happy with HCW..." - you shouldn't get mad - this is unproductive. The secret weapon I would have used is the cities polling. Purvis should have went door to door with the city questionnaire and bragged about the work he and Bob McDowell did to make sure the citizens voice was heard. When they say they haven't received one, make sure you let them know you'll bring it personally to city hall. Pick it up the next day - if they fill it out - they like to vote and those are the people you want to talk to. On the last day I told Purvis what I would have done. He got really angry saying, " I could have used that a month ago". Truth be known, he never listens to me anyway - but was the stongest sitting alderman when it came to knowledge of the Missouri Legislature. Branson Missouri's New Leadership - The Sisterhood with commentary by Mark Twain
Branson's new crop of leaders reigns today. An ugly head emerged this campaign and learning to deal with women politicos presents a new challenge. I'm personally ashamed at what I watched slide. For instance, if Jack Purvis, Marc Williams or Rick Davis cried when I called them, "A politician" a lengthy diatribe with full details of tear count, shades of saline color and relative tear saltiness would have graced the pages of this site. But when Alderwoman Cris Bohinc told me she was going to "look up in the dictionary" what a politician was, prior to taking corporate lobbyist money, I gave a pass.
For days I was crushed, my father taught me not to make women cry. But growing up in a family of strong women - who would shed tears on command to illicit a beating - I should have known better.
When Cris Bohinc issued a slanderous, deceitful and libelous attack to business contacts of mine in order to get out of a debate - I deleted the e-mail and gave her another pass. Again, if Purvis, Williams or Davis wrote such filth - no such pass would have been issued. We would have met at the courthouse for reimbursement for damages.
When Bohinc cried to the Taney County Democratic leadership to stop the recording of the debate - we deleted the video (at least we didn't post it) - after dancing around the topic - it was stated that she'd be willing to raise local taxes to initiate housing projects.
But instead of understanding the application of mercy - the campaign got nastier. We rescinded and I believe I owe my readers an apology for it.
It was irresponsible not to publish the facts of the campaign trail - to give a break where none was deserved. To practice chivalry was in error as it wasn't applied to the public that depends on our news service.
Truth be known, I worked vigorously to stay out of campaign coverage but few stepped up to the task - begged the Branson Daily News to host a debate in addition to friends at local television networks.
During testimony to congress during the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) debate, it was argued that Women were genetically superior to men. The premise was based on the fact women live longer, are less likely to have heart attacks and while our primitive male ancestors hunted for the tribe, women managed animal husbandry and mastered agriculture.
I believe Cris Bohinc, could be a great leader, and demonstrated vindictiveness, manipulation through tears and compromises of honor were attributes she was willing to utilize in her quest for power.
Mayor Raeanne Presley and Alderwoman Sandra Williams proved they weren't above digging in the dirt and willing to misguide citizens to squash resistance and debate at city hall - if ever there was a perversion of public message it is this - that these individuals crusade to promote open government and obey the spirit of Missouri's Sunshine Law.
So woman Politicos, this is my message - keep your big girl panties on - we're no longer applying affirmative action to our political coverage - women can politik as well as men - maybe better.
I hope to recap the history of this campaign season, new tips, tricks and observations. But, since a form of theocratic-democracy is forming in Branson I though I'd begin with Mark Twain and the inside story of Genesis - "The Diary of Adam and Eve". That is not a reason, it is mere waywardness and imbecility. I get no chance to name anything myself. The new creature names everything that comes along, before I can get in a protest. And always that same pretext is offered--it LOOKS like the thing. There is a dodo, for instance. Says the moment one looks at it one sees at a glance that it "looks like a dodo." It will have to keep that name, no doubt. It wearies me to fret about it, and it does no good, anyway. Dodo! It looks no more like a dodo than I do.
WEDNESDAY.--Built me a shelter against the rain, but could not have it to myself in peace. The new creature intruded. When I tried to put it out it shed water out of the holes it looks with, and wiped it away with the back of its paws, and made a noise such as some of the other animals make when they are in distress. I wish it would not talk; it is always talking. That sounds like a cheap fling at the poor creature, a slur; but I do not mean it so. I have never heard the human voice before, and any new and strange sound intruding itself here upon the solemn hush of these dreaming solitudes offends my ear and seems a false note. And this new sound is so close to me; it is right at my shoulder, right at my ear, first on one side and then on the other, and I am used only to sounds that are more or less distant from me.
FRIDAY. The naming goes recklessly on, in spite of anything I can do. I had a very good name for the estate, and it was musical and pretty-- GARDEN OF EDEN. Privately, I continue to call it that, but not any longer publicly. The new creature says it is all woods and rocks and scenery, and therefore has no resemblance to a garden. Says it LOOKS like a park, and does not look like anything BUT a park. Consequently, without consulting me, it has been new-named NIAGARA FALLS PARK. This is sufficiently high-handed, it seems to me. And already there is a sign up:
