Stimulate Me

Ten days ago the Missouri Capital Press Core was bored to tears awaiting the shuffle for stimulus jobs the Missouri Congress would eventually debate.

The first question, now being answered, is what leverage will departments have to reallocate money to different programs.. The key word here is leverage and how much of the money can be used to offset already budgeted funds.

The multi-billion dollar handout has kicked local geo-political entities into high gear and Missouri Governor Jay Nixon launched a website last week to ensure anyone with a good idea can contribute their two cents with a potential multi-million dollar return.

Conservative Missouri Senator Matt Bartle submits, "Missouri's current economic development policy is seriously flawed and tremendously beholden to those with political influence." in his weekly editorial posted on Branson Agent.

During the Missouri Republican Convention in Branson last summer debate over the Fair-Tax which proposes elimination of income tax replace by sales tax created unlikely bedfellows.

From Chad Livengood reporting from Jefferson City for the Springfield News-Leader:

Rep. Ed Emery, R-Lamar, and Rep. Chris Kelly, D-Columbia, presented separate bills to a House committee that advocate for the creation of a system that taxes people based on how much they consume, not how much they earn.

Emery's bill calls for raising the state sales tax from 4.225 percent to 5.11 percent and eliminating the 6 percent personal income tax and 6.25 percent tax on business earnings.

The tax structure is what's known as a "fair tax," because it taxes people equally based on their spending and gets rid of all exemptions and refundable tax credits.

As details about regulations regarding stimulus money, journalists won't be calling any of it monkey business. But the Missourian reports on the first project to receive stimulus money dubbed by some as - "Missouri's Bridge to Nowhere"

Governor Elect Jay Nixon in Branson today to meet with Republicans

Jay Nixon is meeting with Missouri's Republican leadership in Branson today marking an environment of forced bipartisanship. November elections left a Republican majority in the state legislature with Democrats easing into the top spots.

Last week Jay Nixon met with President Elect Barack Obama where billions in new funds towards infrastructure were discussed as a means of stimulating the nations dismal economic environment.

Missouri's Budget shows coffers are $340,000,000 short of projected expenditures prompting Nixon to regress on campaign promises immediately after taking office.

In other news, three Branson area residents were cited as being part of Nixon's transition team.

Missouri Republican Attorney General Candidate Michael Gibbons

Missouri Sen. Michael Gibbons revealed his intention to run for Missouri Attorney General last April 2007 - the radio package was sold to a local radio station and should have made its way to MissouriNet.
I think it's important to note that the parents of Branson native Missouri Senator Jolie Justus's parents were kind enough to pose for a photo with Gibbons.
last year.
The clip above was shot Friday May 30th at the Branson Convention Center. A few of the talking points made their way into Gibbons speech Saturday May 31, 2008 on the convention floor.
Gibbons states in the clip above that his health is better now than before his surgery earlier this year.

Sidenote: 38th Circuit Associate Division I Judge Jim Justus never allows me to bring a camera in the courtroom when he's having a bad hair day. Senator Justus claims her father has "never has a bad hair day in his life" and claimed she believed her mother was a closeted Democrat. This year we grabbed a photo of his totally fabulous new hairdo.
. Unfortunately, Missouri Senator Jack Goodman stumped for Gibbons in his absence so a before/after photo isn't available.
