Capatalizing on the Branson Landing

Since the Branson Landing's inception I've been trying to figure out how to capitalize on it.

A recent Branson Chamber of Commerce survey concluded Branson's $450 million dollar lakefront project was Branson Missouri's top destination.

I've sat center stage the past 31 days with the clearest view of the property - studying.

Rick Huffman, the developer of the Branson Landing stopped by last week before heading to an architectural awards ceremony in Las Vegas. Between then and now he's crushed my cold drink monopoly with Coke machines in the Town Square.

After Branson whistleblower Ruth Denham unfolded corruption in Branson Mayor Raeanne Presley administration not even Huffman, always known as bold in business, dares attempt reform efforts to save Branson's economy.

In three years the Branson Landing and Branson Hills projects have generated over 25 percent of Branson's income. Unfortunately, Branson's current administration can't seem to stop frivolously spending it.

Memorial Day is coming and the seasonal rush has tourists moving from a trickling creek to a steady stream (rain days excluded).

It's time to get paid....

Branson Landing is Branson MIssouri's top Attraction

The Branson Chamber of Commerce conducted a study this year of what tourists do when visitors come to Branson. The study revealed more tourists are shopping than attending shows.

Top Destinations by Branson Tourists:
1. Branson Landing 61%
2. Silver Dollar City 32.5%
3. Visited the Lake 42.9%
4. Noah Theater 21.0%
5. Shepard of the Hills 21%

Top Destinations by Category:
1. Shopping 82%
2.Theaters 80.2%
3. Museums 29.3%

Hollister Grape Festival

Grapes once grew here. The winery coming to Branson is planting them again. In between, Hollister has an annual tradition called the Grape festival. Politicians dress in Togas, bribes are encouraged. Mad props to Hollister Attorney Hank Griffin, who was the only politician who actually wore the toga properly.
The rest wore polos underneath.
Setting Branson area's reputation back 100 years the posse you see above wore traditional "hillbilly" gear.
Contestants are judged by their costumes style ability to stomp grapes and most importantly bribe politicians.
Attendance was great!. Photos will be posted on the Hollister Missouri website.

Andy Williams and Springfield Symphony Perform at Branson Landing(Video)

The video above was shot live while Andy Williams performed "Lady in Red" at the Branson Landing. Williams performed three songs to an appreciative audience Saturday night.
-----
Earlier this afternoon, a major player in the Branson market met with the conductor of the Springfield Symphony to discuss Branson's investment in the arts.
A number of media moves and a perceived change in posture towards Branson from our big sister to the north - Springfield - has some Branson business owner's asking, "How can we be better regional team players?"

Titanic Sand Scupture Day 3 of 4

This image was taken from the homepage of the Branson Edge. The Titanic Web cam is a great way to view the sculpture as it's being formed. The detailed sand sculpted woman at the ships bow. A second camera with a fore view would reveal the majority of work completed during day 2. Tomorrow is the last day to view the sculpture before the sand is swept by tide.
The dolphin to the east was created today. Tomorrow by noon, we anticipate the posterior of the ship to be completed.

Titanic Sand Sculpture

It's 9:00 at night and spectators are trickling into the Titanic Museum parking lot to take a closer look at the 8 feet tall 21 feet wide Titanic sculptured from sand. The creators will continue working on the replica all day tomorrow. The event is free and open to the public. The screen shots above were taken from the Titanic Web Cam via Branson Edge.

Titanic Sand Sculpture

The sand-sculpture at the Titanic Museum entered day two today. The picture seen above is of the creators after they finished the first phase. Today, details of the front of the shop were carved out and the body will be formed tomorrow. It's free to watch or you can view the action from the Branson Edge home page.

Sight and Sound Theater

Charlie Gerken took some great shots and posted them on a Branson Forum. Here's a few we took the other day while the Sight and Sound Theatee is being constructed.

Branson in the fall

All last week chlorophyll escaped the grips of Branson trees and plants causing residents and tourists to sniffle before the greatest show on earth.
Cartoonist John Logan comments today about our failure to properly celebrate this "gift from God." which was the original Branson Attraction - Nature.

This week, the leaves are beginning to change colors.

The changing of the leaves is a changing of the guard for Branson's tourist population. Families are less likely to visit as children have gone back to school and senior's come in droves via tour busses to watch the spectacle.

All weekend I've been picking spots to shoot the transition. From a mountain-home retreat near Lake Taneycomo and the crumbling remnants of stairs built in 1933 leading up a bluff to Hollister's highlands I've been shooting the landscape.

Titanic Sand Sculpture

John and Mary Joslyn, builders of the Titanic Museum are continuing a tradition of innovation by bringing yet another event to Branson.
During the winter they hosted a professional ice sculpting event. On New Years they launched rockets from the deck, last month they released the first traffic cam on 76 Blvd and on September 20-23 they'll take a 15-ton mountain of sand to build the world's largest Titanic sand sculpture.

A press release was sent out today:

Olympic team sculptor Greg Butauski will lead a group of champion sculptors through the unpredictable task of building a 20-foot long, 8-foot tall Titanic out of sand during this free four-day event. Guests of all ages can get in on the fun by building sand creations of their own at the TITANIC Museum Attraction's outdoor beach area. Butauski, who is the president of the National Ice Carvers Association and owner of Art The Experience (www.rockonice.com) in Columbus, Ohio, and his team, will be on hand to answer questions and give tips on building sandcastles.

"This will be our first attempt at building the Titanic out of sand," Butauski said. "As anyone who's ever tried to build a sandcastle knows, sand is a difficult medium to work with. We are very honored to build the Titanic and hope the sand cooperates that weekend," he said.

Butauski and his team of sand sculptors will be at the TITANIC Museum Attraction from 10a.m. to 4p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 – Sunday, Sept. 23. The museum attraction is open from 9a.m. to 9p.m. daily.

For more information on this and other interactive special events coming to the World's Largest TITANIC Museum Attraction, call (417) 334-9500 or visit www.titanicbranson.com.

The World's Largest TITANIC Museum Attraction is Branson's new landmark tourist destination. The 17,000 square foot, ship-shaped structure - built half scale to Titanic's original size - towers more than 100 feet above its anchored position on Highway 76. A 90-minute, self-guided tour covers 20 galleries on two decks where more than 400 priceless artifacts that once belonged to Titanic's passengers or crew are on display. None of the artifacts were retrieved from the ocean's floor.

If you're at the Titanic museum don't forget to ask John about his excavation adventures to the actual site. There are secrets about the Titanic only the Joslyn's know.

Ticketmaster Correction

A representative from Ticketmaster clarified their ticket resale policy this afternoon in response to the post "Ticketmaster wins big in Missouri".

Brian Cameron, marketing manager for Ticketmaster's operations in St. Louis and Branson said:

I wanted to reach out to address a portion of your recent blog about Ticketmaster’s efforts in the secondary market: Your piece ended saying “The resale market will allow the company to sell tickets they aren't currently brokering.” This is not actually the case.
Since Ticketmaster is dedicated to providing fans a safe, secure and 100% legitimate resale marketplace, only tickets purchased initially through Ticketmaster may be resold via TicketExchange.

We appreciate Ticketmaster's assistance in ensuring our editorial integrity with a rapid response though we prefer their money.

Peter Herschend on Gambling

Pete Herschend stepped up to the plate today to discuss gambling. The co-owner of the Herschend empire had a couple other issues on his mind today that he wanted to discuss face to face. From what I gathered it's going to be a tough trip to Jefferson City tomorrow. Herschend just got back from Atlanta which he prefers to the state capital. Herschend said, "In Atlanta I have family and people don't sleep by my door." The issue of the week is the St. Louis School District who will have to yield power to a transition board due to the fact they've shown incompetence in MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) Testing. When asked about the "funding formula" suit Herschend shared the results will have little impact, certain to be heard in an appellate court.
Back to Gambling - Peter Herschend reiterated his position. "We address Casino gambling the same way a doctor addresses Cancer." Herschend's philosophy is to contain gambling in Missouri to the 13 venues gaming already has and has presented concessions to ensure those who have established equity will get on the same page as him. The elimination of loss limits was presented by the anti-gambling lobby whose allies Herschend didn't want to reveal. Herschend's concerns stem from a moral stance in addition to a corporate philosophy of good corporate citizenship. He believes Gambling would inevitably result in the destruction of Branson's economic roots saying "if a large casino were established the theater industry disappear."

Poor Planning Costs Branson Missouri Theatres Millions

For many Branson theatre's, failure to plan is failure to profit. A significant number of Branson venues don't release schedules until doors open in March. Millions in sales are conducted before these schedules are available.
According to Larry Milton, owner of Branson Tourism Center, roughly seven percent of his companies 350,000 annual theatre ticket sales are conducted between January and February. Milton's sales staff routes customers to theatres that have provided him with schedules. Sometimes, tickets sold are a client's second choice.
John Johnson, owner of Reserve Direct contends people are planning trips even earlier. "Tourists are trying to plan April vacations in October….they try to make reservations but they can't," states Johnson. Reserve Direct is a passive system; all transactions originate and are completed through his online booking engine. Consumers that attempt to purchase Branson theatre seats are unable to finish a buy if schedules aren't available. Psychographic and demographic data clue Johnson into details behind what motivates and when tourists are trying to book vacation packages. The company's local product, Reserve Branson yielded over $6.4 million in bookings last year.
Though Branson remains both Johnson's primary market and corporate headquarters, expansion into new tourist destinations has ensued full throttle over the last couple of years. He admits some markets are difficult to penetrate citing challenges the Pigeon Forge region has created for his company. Steady traffic and consistent numbers during peak weeks have convinced venues such as Dollywood that marketing funds should be dedicated to intercept strategies. Even venues such as Dixie Stampede, who've experienced substantial success with Reserve Direct locally, rely on influencing tourists after they've already arrived in the Gatlinburg region. Convincing the Pigeon Forge market that efforts focused towards demand creation to a wider market is proving to be an uphill battle, at least for the time being. Johnson is convinced this will change when the market reaches a larger critical mass and increased competition becomes more of an issue. His experience comes from a recent launch in Orlando where he found a Disney deal easy to ink. Negotiations with the destination superpower took less than a week.
Milton attributes his success in Branson to out of area marketing. A budget dedicated to pitching consumers outside our area has exceeded $1,000,000 annually over the last two years.
Both Milton and Johnson agree that an early release of show schedules would result in more businesses beginning the season deeper in the black without spending a penny.

Branson Announces Antique Car Rally

The city of Branson issued a press release Monday just a couple of days before a meeting at the Hilton Promenade.
Jim Cox leaked this story several months ago and dropped some details in a video clip posted last month.A couple months ago I watched him walk Shoji Tabuchi through the rules of the race. It should be an interesting show.

Silver Dollar City Expansion Involves- 5 million dollar TIF

Silver Dollar City formally submitted a proposal to ease traffic congestion to Indian Point and Silver Dollar City. This will be Stone County's first TIF (Tax Increment Financing) project and I'm currently working on copy to inform citizens of Stone County about TIF's and what the implications of the project are. I'll be posting more on this issue shortly; but, if a picture is worth a 1000 words than click on the image above to view the engineering diagram of the project.
According to the Stone County Commission, Silver Dollar City sales tax revenues account for 20% of the overall Stone County collected sales taxes. The plan will provide unfettered access from HWY 76 to the park and enable Indian Point residents to bypass Silver Dollar City traffic on Indian Point Drive. Hershchend Family Entertainment Corporation is hoping to increase access to Silver Dollar City and believes approval and completion of the project may help the Missouri Department of Transportation continue to develop arteries through Branson via HWy 76 and southbound on HWY 13. Traffic congestion is a major problem according to Silver Dollar City manager Brad Thomas and easing access is good for Branson, Stone County and tourism to the region in general. More to come...
