It's not the type of gambling Rockaway Beach wanted, but, starting tomorrow, Rockaway Beach will have gambling in the form of a Texas Hold Em Tournament.

Branson Chamber of Commerce Confirms Anti-Gambling Stance
Branson Chamber Board Reaffirms Anti-Gambling Stance
By Kathy Buckstaff
(BRANSON, MO.) The Board of Directors of the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce has unanimously voted to reaffirm their opposition to gambling in the Branson area.
“Because of the nature of the area and the number of people who visit here, gambling interests will always have us as a potential target, and we want to remind those interests of our opposition,” said Branson Chamber President Ross Summers. “Economically and culturally, it’s a bad fit for the area, and according to research, it’s opposed by our visitors.”
Branson is a popular tourism destination with nearly eight million visitors a year enjoying the authentic Ozarks hospitality, the live entertainment bonanza and many choices for active relaxation in the outdoors.
The Branson Board of Alderman also recently unanimously passed a resolution opposing gambling in Branson and the Tri-Lakes area, said city spokesman Jerry Adams. The issue was revisited because new aldermen were elected to the board this year, and the board wanted to again show unity, Adams said.

The billboards are propaganda funded by a casino wishing to establish itself in Rockaway Beach. Missouri Gambling Lobby Gearing Up For 2008 Session

Missouri's gambling interests seem to have found some new friends - Republicans. At least they're looking for some Republican support as they gear up for the 2008 session.
Republican Senator Matt Bartle broke ranks with Senate Republicans opposing any leeway for Missouri's gambling interests.
The Southern Missouri Anti-Gambling strategy, led by Pete Herschend intends to create a "Great Wall" blocking new gambling operations from spreading to the southern parts of the state. Herschend calls gambling a cancer and said he's willing to compromise with Missouri's gambling lobby on loss limits to stop the spread of casinos.
Missouri's Gaming Commission provided some foreshadowing a couple weeks ago saying Missouri's loss limits make Kansas City and St. Louis casinos uncompetitive.
The Kansas legislature loosened gambling regulations earlier this year and Illinois is moving rapidly on the same path.

Rockaway Beach Gambling not top priority for Majestic Casino

The St. Louis Dispatch visits Ihm's hometown, Las Vegas, to compare and contrast the two tourist destinations. After visiting both destination's writer Steve Persall calls Las Vegas, "Branson of the Mohave". The title, "What happens in Vegas won't in Branson" reflects the general tone of the article and perhaps the general lackluster composure of Ihm as he shows me a poker face.
Or perhaps, Ihm isn't all that excited about what Rockaway Beach is holding in their deck. Who could blame the guy, after all - Rockaway Beach's political climate is reminiscent of patients running the asylum - or is it five-year-olds running a nursery?
Rockaway Beach city council seemed to spend more time in court last year trying to figure out who the "real mayor" was than governing. The overturning of an alderman after a recount didn't show a whole lot of stability this year either.
I can understand why Ihm didn't have anything to say about plans to open a casino in Rockaway Beach - it might have been the best news coming out of the city all year.
